Leeds United transfer business wasn’t complete with Nketiah

Leeds United and deadline days don’t go together well. It’s either no-one arriving or players going that’s the issue.

Last time out it was the Dan James debacle that saw Leeds United lose out with Swansea not willing to answer the final call. Another famous incident saw the club Twitter account warn fans not to go to bed, only to have to watch Matt Smith and Dom Poleon leave the Whites.

To say Leeds United fans distrust the trials and tribulations of a transfer window would be an understatement indeed. That is why, when  United were in the depths of the latest deadline day, Whites fans were apprehensive as the hours ticked by.

it was a day that started well with early confirmation of the season-long loan capture of France Under-20 keeper Ilhan Meslier. As the day dragged on, news filtered in, filtered out, then came back that Leeds were/weren’t/night be interested in landing Arsenal’s rated young striker Eddie Nketiah. After a Dragon’s Den-style pitch, United managed to land the 49-goal youngster.

However, as Sun reporter Alan Nixon confirms in challenging a Leeds United fan on Twitter, Nketiah wasn’t even Leeds’ last purported piece of business that the Whites hoped to wrap up that day.

Kent was the final piece of Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa’s four identified summer targets. The other three in Helder Costa, Ben White and Jack Harrison all arrived at Elland Road – it was just Ryan Kent who was outstanding.

It was widely known that the Whites were in for Kent, Bielsa had even watched the Liverpool winger himself in a friendly against Bradford City. The Whites had even put a bid in for the six-goal, six-assist standout at Rangers last season. All that was common knowledge, common knowledge indeed.

What wasn’t common knowledge was that United  were interested in bringing Kent in AFTER they’d signed Eddie Nketiah. They were the side who put the highest bid in for the Anfield youngster, yet it wasn’t a bid that was substantial enough to land him.
