Leeds United interest in Kent boosted by Rangers decision over Barker

According to Sky Sports (Live Transfer tracker – 09:09), Scottish side Rangers are closing in on Manchester City winger Brandon Barker. This interest could very well prove to be good news for Leeds United and their tracking of Ryan Kent.

Liverpool winger Kent is thought to be the last of Marcelo Bielsa’s outstanding quartet of summer targets. Leeds United fans have seen three of that quartet rock up at Elland Road this window what with the signings of Helder Costa, Ben White and Jack Harrison – the latter two arriving on loan deals from Brighton and Manchester City respectively.

Leeds have already announced the capture of young French stopper IllanMeslier on a season-long loan from FC Lorient, and are tipped to capture Arsenal starlet Eddie Nketiah. Many see that as their business signed, sealed and delivered for the summer 2019 window.

However, this late move by Rangers for Brandon Barker could very well force a rethink and change of strategy at Elland Road. Kent has been watched by Bielsa in a pre-season friendly at Bradford City’s Valley Parade where he started on the left-hand side of a front three. There is very little doubt that he is a player that Bielsa has a lot of admiration for.

He is also a player who was courted by Rangers after a successful loan for Steven Gerrard’s side last season. In his time at the Scottish giants, Kent more than showed himself capable enough of handling that level of football. He scored six goals and added six assists in his time at Ibrox.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that a move away from Anfield will only be a sale and not a further loan move. Leeds United have been buoyed by the recent sale of Kemar Roofe and have some money in the bank from other transfers earlier in the window. This should allow them a degree of FFP ‘wiggle room’ if they are entertaining a late move for Kent.
