Doncaster Rovers Belles will be brought under the control of the Club Doncaster umbrella to help ensure the team’s future in Yorkshire.

Doncaster Belles are one the famous names in women’s football in England, dominating the game in the late 1980s and early 90s, but have struggled to replicate that success in the professional era.

Although the team reached the FA Women’s Cup Final 11 times in 12 years at the height of their power, as well as in 2000 and 2002, they are currently playing in the WNL Northern Premier, which is the third tier of the new league pyramid created by the FA last year.

Despite their rich history, Doncaster are struggling badly, with only Bradford City, who have lost all of their 20 games this season, below them in the table. There have also been financial problems to contend with and the merger is designed to ease that burden.

The Club Doncaster group already incorporates Doncaster Rovers Football Club, Doncaster Rugby League Football Club, Club Doncaster Foundation, Club Doncaster Sports College and will now take control of the running of the Belles in the hope of returning them to the top two divisions of the professional game.

"I have really enjoyed being a custodian of this fantastic team over the past few years, said Belles chair Faye Lygo. “But feel, for the Belles to progress, we need to make this change.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Doncaster Rovers Belles and a move that will help secure the future of the club for years to come. We look forward to seeing the progression the Belles will make as part of Club Doncaster."

Club Doncaster chief executive Gavin Baldwin added: "We are delighted to have the Belles on board. They are one of the most successful women's football teams in England and are an excellent addition to the Club Doncaster family.

"We are looking forward to celebrating their golden anniversary and already have some exciting plans once they join the family in May. We will be sharing more in the near future.”
