Scunthorpe United confirm sacking of Stuart McCall

Scunthorpe United have sacked Stuart McCall as their head coach as confirmed by a statement from the team.

McCall, who has managed clubs such as Bradford City, Rangers and Motherwell, became the manager of Scunthorpe back in August, taking over Daws who had been the interim head coach for the end of the previous season. He was tasked with getting Scunthorpe back into the Sky Bet League One play-offs but they have struggled and are more likely to get relegated this season than get promoted.

And this has now led to McCall being sacked with just a short amount of the season to go. But there will be no replacement in the immediate future. The club has confirmed that Andy Dawson, who was the assistant caretaker manager when Nick Daws had to take temporary charge on previous occasions, will take control until the end of the season with the implication being that they will find their new boss in the summer.

This will be a big blow for McCall who had done well to rebuild his reputation in England following a spell with Bradford where he helped lead them to the play-off final. Where his future lies now is unknown and he may end up returning to his native Scotland. Scunthorpe now will have to stabilise and make sure their form doesn’t get so bad that they end up in a serious battle against relegation. Dawson will also hope to show his managerial ability and impress the board enough to get the job on a permanent basis.
